DAAD Fellowships for Study Abroad:

The "Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst" (DAAD, German Academic Exchange Service) offers a number of support programs for German students who want to spend one or two semesters in the US, and US students who want to do the same in Germany. Generally students have to apply themselves for these fellowships/travel support grants. Faculty only support such applications through letters of recommendation/invitation etc.

German Students ---> US:

German students who want to come to USF should visit the German website of the DAAD (www.daad.de) and check out the latest program information. The DAAD web site has a great database search tool for their (and other) fellowship opportunities. As of summer 2008 the following programs appear to be relevant for short term visits:

Undergraduate Students ("Studierende")
Graduate Students ("Doktoranden/Master Studenten")
Short term stay for taking classes DAAD program: "Semesteraufenthalte für Studierende"
DAAD program: "Semesteraufenthalte Masterstudiengänge"
One year stay for taking classes DAAD program: "Jahresstipendien für Studierende aller Fächer"
Short term stay for thesis research DAAD program: "Kurzfristige Studienaufenthalte für Abschlussarbeiten" DAAD programs: "Kurzfristige Studienaufenthalte zur Anfertigung einer Masterarbeit", and "Jahres- und Kurzstipendien für Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden"

Note that the "Kurzfristige Studienaufenthalte fuer Abschlussarbeiten von Studierenden" stipend has flexible application and start dates (per communication with a DAAD representative). In other words, this stipend can be applied for any start/end dates, as long as the application is received by DAAD at least three months prior to start of the research program.

US Students ---> Germany:

The DAAD also offers individual fellowships for US students who want to study in Germany through their New York office. Please, check their website for the latest information. As of summer 2008 there seem to be these offerings for short visits:

1) Fellowships for undergraduates:

Undergraduate Scholarships
Scholarships for 4 to 10 months of study, thesis research or an internship for students in any academic field.

RISE - Research Internships in Science and Engineering
Summertime internships with German doctoral students at universities and research institutions--no German required!

RISE professional
Students about to complete their bachelor's or wndergrads who are DAAD alumni can apply for these summer internships with German companies.

2) Fellowships for graduate students:

Study Scholarship
This graduate scholarship program for study in Germany is open to students about to complete their undergraduate studies (i.e. students can apply for graduate support, while completing their Bachelor degrees).

Research Grant
Research grants are awarded primarily to highly qualified PhD candidates who are early in their academic/professional careers or to individuals wishing to earn a doctoral degree in Germany. Funding may also be granted to recent PhDs who would like to conduct research.

There are also offerings for US students who want to learn German/take language classes at German universities. Please, check the DAAD website for details.
